Information about INVERNESS Inverness can lay claim to being one of Scotlandís most historic cities, which is no mean feat! Settlements in the area date back several thousand years, and the standing stones of Clava Cairns are as old as Stonehenge. Culloden Moor, just outside Inverness, is the site of the last pitched battle that took place on British soil where the Jacobite uprising was led by Bonnie Prince Charlie and has since been immortalised in film and on television. Following the defeat of the Jacobites, Fort George was built. This fort is one of the most outstanding artillery fortifications in Europe and commands fantastic views of the Black Isle and the Moray Firth, making it well worth a visit. Of course, Invernessís and perhaps Scotlandís most famous resident lives in Loch Ness. At 24 miles (38km) long, one mile (1.6km) wide and with depths of over 700ft (225m), it is the largest body of fresh water in Europe and is big enough for any monster to live in!. Known as the capital of the Highlands, Inverness was designated a city in the millennium year 2000.
